Madiba’s Legacy

RIP Nelson Mandela. Here are some highlights of his life.

While Mandela was studying law as a young man, he became involved in the movement against racial discrimination in apartheid South Africa. Mandela forged strong relationships with black and white activists and in 1944 he joined the African National Congress.

On August 5, 1962 Mandela was arrested, charged with treason and later (in 1964) sentenced to life imprisonment.

Here is an audio recording of Mandela’s, 1964 courtroom speech.

Below Mandela speaks to the people of South Africa (on Feb. 11, 1990) after being released from prison, where he was held for 27 years. He went on to become the president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

“I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” -Mandela

Watch below as President Obama pays tribute to Mandela during his memorial service held in Soweto earlier today.

“It is hard to eulogize any man — to capture in words not just the facts and the dates that make a life, but the essential truth of a person — their private joys and sorrows; the quiet moments and unique qualities that illuminate someone‚Äôs soul. How much harder to do so for a giant of history, who moved a nation toward justice, and in the process moved billions around the world….” -Obama
